As part of ongoing development by BP, we were asked to solve a very interesting problem for them.
How do you make Health and Safety procedural checklists and instruction manuals look interesting enough to keep staff focused, avoid them skipping stages in the instruction process and therefore prevent accidents?
Taking this as a purely graphical project, we proposed introducing a set of icons featuring a series of symbols and based on a “traffic light” system of different levels of importance for each stage. We also redesigned how each step of the process could be shown on paper (- in Microsoft Word) in the form of an informative flow chart with each section picked out so that it was easy to follow, and sign off (an imperative as part of the H&S initiative.)
This project was then applied to over 5000 separate procedures undertaken on a daily basis by the staff looking after the Forties Pipeline System.
